Condor Moving Systems Partners with Move for Hunger

Condor Moving Systems Partners with Move for Hunger

What do you do with all the canned goods and non-perishables in your pantry when you’re moving across the country?  As a general rule, it’s always best to lighten your load as much as possible when you’re moving across the country; canned goods can add a significant amount of weight to your shipment.  In fact, often times the cost to ship canned goods and non-perishable food items exceeds the value of what you initially paid for the family size can of corn or tomato sauce.  These items can easily be replaced once you’ve settled into your new home which will save you paying almost triple of the value of the items.  Additionally, it’s a good way to clean out the panty and relieve yourself of the impulse buy you made six months ago of that random can of tuna or artichoke hearts.  Good news!!  Condor Moving Systems participates in “Move for Hunger”, a non-profit organization working with moving companies all over the country to alleviate customers of their canned goods and non-perishables.  Condor Moving Systems will tag the boxes you wish to donate with a “Move for Hunger” sticker and deliver them to the local food bank free of charge.  “Move for Hunger” organization is working to be one of the largest year round service programs working with local food banks and relocation companies all of the country to give back to the community and make a positive impact locally.  Condor Moving Systems is proud to be a member of this important organization while assisting our customers in alleviating stress, saving money and lightening the load.  Win, win!

Saving Money on Your Local Move

For people who are moving within the state of Texas, the price is based on an hourly rate, instead of the weight. This makes life easier for you, but there are still ways to save money by shaving off the amount of time it takes for the movers to get you loaded.

Make sure you “lighten your load” before your move. If you don’t need something, get rid of it before your move date. The more items you move, the more time it takes.

Also, you’ll want to make sure your inventory list is accurate. While you aren’t penalized for added items on a local move, additional items take more time to move. Plus, we’ll want to make sure we have reserved enough truck space & manpower, as a more efficiency equals less time on the clock.

Lastly, make sure you’ve completed your packing before the movers arrive. One thing we see happening frequently is, people become tired the night before the move, and often decide to finish packing the next day while the movers are loading. You never know what they will need to load first, and since your movers cannot wait for you to complete your packing, they will have to assist you with it. This is how people incur extra charges for which they weren’t planning. Additionally, be sure to get assistance for any “special care items” you may not know how to pack securely before the day of your move, so there are no surprise packing expenses on moving day.

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, nothing will make your move more stress-free than a little bit of preparation. Because if you don’t have time to prepare properly, when will you have time to fix it?

Lighten Your Load, Save Money!

The majority of individuals and families look at moving as one of the most stressful things that they will experience in their lives. Choosing a professional moving company will certainly help deter a good percentage of this stress, but let’s face it, there is still the herculean task of organizing. The larger the family, the larger the task, one would presume, but surveys prove that moving is just as stressful for an individual as a family of 8!

How then to make this task a bit easier, even rewarding?

As a moving consultant, I personally think (and suggest to my clients) that moving is great time to “trim the fat”, so to speak, or to take assessment of what one truly needs and what can be eliminated from the moving process. Not only will this make your packing (and, consequently, your unpacking) process much easier but it will also save you money! Remember, the less weight you are shipping the lower your overall costs will be! Whether you intend to sell unwanted items or donate to your local charity, assess your own possessions first (it always helps to set an example) and then talk to your family to see what they can part with. Ask your family, whether they be adults, toddlers or teens, to make a list of the things that they can’t bear to part with (obviously this will require assistance for the very young) and those things they just might not need any more or have out grown.  In my personal experience, helping my brother move his family of six, I discovered that making “suggestions” is fine, but making demands removes the “participation” and the “willingness” to be cooperative, so be patient and you will soon be surprised at how quickly your family will respond to your plans.

If you plan on having a yard sale to sell off unwanted items, letting children keep what is earned from their donations to the sale is not only rewarding, but a great lesson in economics. As a suggestion, tell them the money will be held in a family “escrow” until you arrive at your new home as this will avoid having “new” items to ship. This will also give your family an opportunity to explore the shops in your new neighborhood! If you plan on donating to charity, this can be just as rewarding as material gain (if not more), and most families (especially children) tend to find more that they can part with (remember, not only is this rewarding in a conscientious way, but it is also tax write off). It is certainly not uncommon to opt to both sell items and donate to charity.

As for the individual moving, a good rule of thumb is- if you haven’t thought about it, looked at it or used it in the last year; you don’t need it!

However you choose to “lighten your load”, making your family and Condor Moving Systems part of the process can be rewarding and save you money!

Full Service Movers versus Renting a Truck

Working in the moving industry for the last several years the phrase “We’re going to do the move ourselves” hurts my ears and completely melts my brain every time I hear it.  For the most part, this decision comes very easily to people that have a million and one things on their mind and a mountain of expenses adding up when moving; and is also precisely why I cannot fathom why renting a truck seems like the logical solution.  Obviously, the key issue is money, money, money-this is absolutely not a secret.  No one person likes to look at a price tag in the three to four digit range for a service they can seemingly do on their own; however, the thought process here is faulty for so many reasons it’s almost impossible to address each one without losing your attention or completely throwing you in a panic attack!  Trust me when I tell you renting a truck will cost more in the long run when you add all the additional expenses together.

Is renting a truck cheap?  No, it is not cheap!  Here in lies your first expense.  What is included in the truck rental?  The answer is nothing-just the truck and you’ll even have to replenish the ridiculously priced and plentiful fuel that came in the truck.  Then, upon the rental they will begin to up sell you on services that really are necessary but certainly not included in the initial price of the truck rental.  Just to name a few:  insurance, moving blankets, boxes, tape, some even offer help with labor to load the truck.  And just a little side note, the insurance you purchase is not to covers your household items, it’s to cover potential damage to the truck you just rented and do not own.  If you’re not already in the four digit price range, you will be soon because you haven’t even driven off the parking lot!  So now you have the truck, minimal moving blankets to cover the finest furniture and insurance for this monster truck you’re driving; however, the expenses haven’t even started.

Who is going to load the truck?  Uncle Joe?  I highly doubt it; he will conveniently have a camping trip scheduled the weekend of your move along with all your other cousins and family members.  You are now faced with another expense of hiring labor to help you load the truck with all of your precious belongings you’ve worked so hard to acquire but you have to hire day labor that have never moved a piece of furniture and trust they’re not going to steal from you or break any of the furniture you have because frankly- they won’t care if they drop your 50” plasma TV down the stairs- they don’t know you and you certainly don’t have any recourse in such an instance.

Have you ever fueled a big truck?  Enough said.  Think about it.  It takes minimum $50 to fuel a small compact car; can you imagine fueling a large truck…and with diesel fuel?

Have you ever tried to drive faster than 55 mph in one of those things?  Good luck.  You will likely have to incur hotel costs for an overnight, if not two.  Quick short story, I have a very close friend of mine that rented a truck because she was moving from NY to TX, she packed it with everything she owned including precious, irreplaceable pictures, etc with no monetary value, she stopped for an overnight and the entire truck was stolen and to this day none of her items have ever been recovered.  Can you imagine?

In closing, why would you do this to yourself when you can hire Condor Moving Systems, a full service moving company, to manage all of the above?  We own and operate our own trucks, we offer full protection coverage for your household goods (forget about damage to the truck- we protect YOUR items),  we use unlimited heavy duty moving pads to insure each and every piece of furniture is wrapped for optimal protection,  we have full time experienced professional moving crews, you contribute a very small portion of fuel cost that we include in the estimate, and last but not least; no one is getting away with a huge truck with the logo Condor Moving Systems all over the side of it; not to mention the truck is never left unattended when occupied with household goods.  Do yourself a favor and use Condor Moving Systems where one price covers it all!
